A few of my favorite photo locations

There are endless overlooks and gorgeous trail views in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Three of my favorite photo spots in the park are Cades Cove, Kuwohi Observation Tower and Luftee Overlook along Newfound Gap Road. I love all of these at sunrise, but really they are worth a visit at any time of day.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Cades Cove closes for vehicle-free days through the summer

  • There’s a short but steep hike up to the Kuwohi Observation Tower, and parking is easiest very early in the day

Make sure to check the park website for details on required parking permits and for updates about road closures.

General park tips

When I visit the smokies, I aim for a pretty quiet experience both on trail and at my camp site. Since I don’t spend too much time in the surrounding towns, my restaurant recommendations are a little limited for this park.

However, here are some general tips:

  • For camping information, click here.

  • If you enjoy horseback riding, I have had great experiences with Smokemont Riding Stables. The tours are so gorgeous, especially in the fall during leaf season.

  • A couple of spots I always like to visit with gluten-free options in Bryson City:
