Botany Bay, South Carolina
The boneyard beach at Botany Bay in South Carolina
Edisto Island
Edisto Island is one of my favorite places in South Carolina. You get beautiful ocean views, spanish moss hanging from the old oak trees, a great farmer’s market and the boneyard beach.
A few planning tips
Read over the details on the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Botany Bay website before you go.
Hunting season
The area does close for hunting season. Check the calendar on the SCDNR website to make sure Botany Bay is open for visitors when you’re planning to be there.
I learned this the hard way the first time I tried to visit and it was closed for deer season.
Don’t be like me. Check the website.
Tide calendar
The beach is accessible during low tide, so Google the area’s tide chart before you go. There is a short trail that you hike from the parking area to the beach and it will be under water during high tide.
When I visited, I went early in the morning as the high tide was going out. Parking was easy, there were only a few other visitors, and I had hours to wander around.
Leave no trace
There are so many beautiful shells, bits of driftwood and other amazing things to see on this beach.
Follow the rules during your visit and leave no trace so others can enjoy it, too.
Nearby adventures
Not too far away from Edisto Island is Charleston Outdoor Adventures. I’ve had great experiences with them.
So far I’ve been on their guided tour to Morris Island, where I found amazing seashells, and I rented a kayak to cruise around the local creeks where so many dolphins swam right by me.
There also is a restaurant on site if you’re hungry when you get back from your adventure.
The crab dip is 10/10!
